C112 Proposing drainage measures to protect coral reefs
A previous study in Majuro (Fujita et al., 2009) revealed that areas more susceptible to anthropogenic pollution have lower foraminifera densities. Foraminifera densities were particularly low on the ocean-facing coral reefs and nearby reef flats on the east coast of the DUD area. In these areas, sediment production by foraminifera is virtually impossible.
To ensure the sustainability of the sediment-producing functions of atoll islands, the following measures are necessary to maintain the health of coral reefs, including foraminifera:
- - Confirming sewer pipe connections from homes
- - Promoting sewer connections from homes that are not currently connected
- - Developing sewer systems in areas without sewer pipes
- - Measures for vessel discharge (strict compliance with the Marpol Convention, etc.)
